How I Cloth Diaper

A friend of mine requested a cloth diaper update, and I realized how long it has been sense I had touched on it..so I will try to catch you all up in one post! Here we go!

I still think that a prefold, a snappi and a cover are the best poop containers especially for breast fed infant poopies...i only had one blow out that way and asher was in a excer saucer..and i think the seat and the massive amount of poop worked together for a mess..but really..it was once..and previous to that he was exploding out of his disposable almost every change..so It really is amazing! That being said we have switched to a new form of diaper, for easy changing..Kris is much more comfortable changing the new diapers and the nursery workers at church do not seem as intimidated...I still plan on using covers and prefolds...but right now, because i sew my own, i am sewing Pocket diapers, in one size.

What is a One size pocket diaper you may ask? Great question!

Above you see the outside and inside of the ones I sew. You can see on the out side of the water proof outer layer I have elastic at the legs and back and snaps to fit around the waist. To make it a one size diaper, which really just means, it can be used from around 9 lbs to 32 lbs, there are 3 sets of snaps to adjust the length. So I can use this one diaper for Asher and Titus, with great success in the fit! The inside I use suede cloth. I had chosen suede cloth because micro fleece can hold stink easier, and poop rolls off suede cloth . You can see the "pocket" sticking up in the pic to the right...the diapers i sew can hold a pre fold as an insert. You just stuff an insert into the pocket and snap it on like a disposable. There are velcro options, but snaps last longer, so I went with snaps. Velcro would allow for a quicker change. I am currently sewing inserts and experimenting with them, I think i am gonna go with an Bamboo fleece with possibly a micro fiber middle..but I am still playing around with the combo. I know I do not like the mostly hemp inserts. The suede cloth is a stay dry layer they baby can not feel the wet. I chose the pocket diaper option because you can customize the inserts to how absorbent you need them, plus I feel like the inserts get cleaner if i can pull them out. There are diapers out there that mimic a disposable..where the inner absorbent layer is permanently in the diaper and there is no pocket..but like I said, i feel this way is cleaner..it may not be..but well, I can have my quirks cant I?

Would you like to see some pic in action? Sorry about the blur..my kids take the "In action" part seriously!

you can see Asher in the diaper at the top in the elephant print, and Titus in the black diaper on the bottom, same size diaper just on a different snap setting!

How do I care for these diapers?

Well, let me tell you the one thing I dont like about cloth! (i am honest) The morning diaper stinks like a barn! Its so nasty! Ha! Thats the worst of it! But my boys used to get open sores from the chemicals of disposables, so the trade off is worth it to me! I soak the morning diapers in the sink for 10 minutes after i take them off. Cause they are so nasty...Then i wring them out and throw them in my diaper pail that has a re usable/washable liner in it.

My actual diaper pail!

My Laundry routine? I am currently doing wash every 2 days, i can go 3.  I use babyganics pictured below, I buy it from buy buy baby with a 20 % off coupon which makes it $8 and it last me 4 months. I use a teaspoon, and i must have very soft water because it suds like crazy, i always make sure I do an extra rinse and never have stink or need to strip my diapers. Also i never dry diapers in the dryer, you can..but i want mine to last 3 kids. So I hang them to dry!

And thats it! My exciting diaper routine!

  1. I wished I had thought of this when my kids were in diapers. And look at the cute diapers that you can create....so much nicer than disposible ones. You are such a clever niece. Love you loads.

  2. So, so, cute! I'm sure those pocket ones dry so much faster w/the removable insert, vs the all in ones! Especially hang drying. I've got to replace 2 of my covers, so I finally get to look at the websites you sent me :-)

  4. you're doing a nice job with making them, i can hardly tell their handmade!

why don't you like hemp? i use hemp babies inserts for naps and they hold up...i have 2 bamboo that i like too but they're a fuzz thicker.

i am totally trying this detergent next i think...

  5. Every time I use hemp (with higher percentages) it gives Asher a rash...not a bad one..but it still bothers me! I should have put a pic of my insert on here, i sew my bamboo fleece side in, hoping to avoid pilling in the wash. I am getting quite a system down..they are getting better and better in my standard, i am trying to sew a bunch for my kids and then get them good enough to start selling on etsy!

  6. i see, i guess i've always put them inside the pocket and not on his skin to notice. my big annoyance was that i attempted using a homemade cloth friendly diaper rash cream and jackson is SOOO allergic to it. its so bad. i feel terrible. i had the feeling it would happen since i'm allergic to lanolin but i had to try it out to see. oy! my poor boys' bum.

i always feel like the first few of anything handmade i make don't turn out as good as later ones do, so practice definitely helps. and helps build confidence too! i bet you could totally sell online once you make enough for your crew. they look awesome.
